Understanding the difference between how red oaks (Shumard oak, Texas red oak, blackjack oak) and live oaks react to Ceratocystis fagacearum is fundamental to saving your landscape. Red oaks are completely susceptible and have zero natural resistance. Once the fungus enters a red oak's vascular system, tyloses plug the water vessels, causing the entire canopy to turn bronze, curl, and drop within 2 to 4 weeks. Most critically, dying red oaks produce sweet-smelling fungal spore mats under their bark in spring, which attract nitidulid beetles that carry fresh spores miles away.

For this reason, Texas forestry protocols require that infected red oaks be felled and destroyed immediately. They cannot be saved with fungicide once symptoms appear.
